We enjoy cream Tea at the Hall before leaving.

WEDNESDAY Today we make our way to historic Colchester for some free time and chance to obtain lunch. The oldest town in England boasts a wide “boulevard” as a main street, with many interesting pedestrian shopping malls and lanes with specialist shops. At one end of the street is beautiful Castle Park, complete with the largest Norman Keep ever constructed, riverside walks and pleasant gardens. This afternoon we make our way back with a drive to Mersea Island and West Mersea for a short break before returning to the hotel

THURSDAY For our final outing we first visit the delightful town of Maldon, on the Blackwater estuary. In bygone times the town was a smugglers haven and today you have chance to explore and obtain lunch. We are on our way to Papermill Lock to the Victoria for a delightful afternoon cruise along the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation. Refreshments are available on board

FRIDAY After breakfast we head southwards to visit the Hidcote Manor Garden, an Arts and Crafts garden in the north Cotswolds. Explore the maze of narrow paved pathways and discover secret gardens, magnificent vistas and plants that burst with colour. Find a quiet spot and sit on one of the ornate benches and watch green woodpeckers search for their lunch or listen to the calls from the buzzards circling overhead. Time it right and you might catch a glimpse of the elusive hummingbird moth. Before heading home we shall make a visit to Stratford upon Avon with a chance for afternoon tea.

Eastbourne 7 Days 15 – 21 May 2019

The elegance intended by the 7th Duke of Devonshire when he designed Eastbourne in 1834 still survives. Private houses, good hotels and banks of flowers are to be found along the three mile level Esplanade, while at its centre is the Wish Tower and several theatres. There is an excellent shopping centre. I always think Eastbourne is how holidays used to be! The warm welcome at the Haddon Hall Hotel and the beautiful Sussex countryside make Eastbourne the perfect venue for Kettlewell’s South coast holiday.

YOUR HOTEL The Haddon Hall Hotel is enviably situated at the seafront end of Devonshire Place, a broad lined tree avenue which links the main promenade with the town centre. The bandstand is located across the road from the hotel. All of the well furnished bedrooms have private facilities with colour TV and tea and coffee makers. FRIDAY A morning visit to Battle, a small historic town, with interesting shops and an Abbey which is open to the public. We shall then continue to Bexhill to round the day off.

SATURDAY After breakfast we travel to Rye a rich maritime maze of cobbled streets that has long been a haven for writers and painters after which we shall visit the picturesque town of Tenterden with its attractive high street and historic houses and shops, used in “Darling Buds of May”.

SUNDAY A day to enjoy Eastbourne in your own way, perhaps look around its splendid shopping centre.

MONDAY After breakfast we have an excursion to Brighton, which has a bohemian, artistic atmosphere that can’t be found anywhere else. It has lovely beaches, great shopping and the famous Royal Pavilion the former residence of George the Prince of Wales built as an exotic seaside retreat.

TUESDAY All too soon we must leave Eastbourne after breakfast and head North. We shall make a lunch stop and reach Retford late afternoon.

Today we say goodbye to the Riverside Lodge Hotel and travel to Cairnryan to board our 2 hour 20 minute ferry sailing to Belfast, from where continue on to our hotel for the next 3 nights in Carrickmacross.

MONDAY Dublin & Liffey River Cruise
This morning, we travel to Dublin and enjoy a 45 minute guided cruise on the River Liffey before enjoying free time to explore the many attractions Dublin has to offer, including the Guinness Store House, Jameson’s Distillery, Trinity College, Dublin Castle, St Patricks Cathedral or one of Dublin’s newer attractions such as EPIC Ireland or the GPO Witness History exhibition.

Today we travel to Belfast where our guide joins us for a half day step on guided tour of this fascinating city. After our tour, we visit Titanic Belfast, the world’s largest Titanic exhibition and a must see for any tour of Belfast. WEDNESDAY Malahide Castle & Jouney to Caernarfon
This morning, we visit Malahide Castle & Gardens where we enjoy a 45 minute guided tour. After our tour, we travel to nearby Dublin Port and board the afternoon sailing to Holyhead.

THURSDAY Caernarfon & Castle
This morning we visit the magnificent Caernarfon Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with a stunning location on the banks of the River Seiont. In the afternoon we enjoy time at leisure to explore our base of Caernarfon, Gwynedd’s county town. We can take a stroll around the town’s narrow streets or stylishly redeveloped waterfront.

There are lots of opportunity for a drink and a bite to eat.

WEDNESDAY Today we commence with a journey east along the North Kent coastline towards Whitstable, famous the world over for its Oysters. After a brief stop for coffee, we then head to R.A.F. Manston, (one of only a few “Battle of Britain” airfields still in use today) home of the Spitfire & Hurricane Memorial Museum. Opened by Dame Vera Lynn in 1988, the museum houses two fine examples of the Spitfire and Hurricane as well as many artefacts from the Second World War. We then travel to Sandwich, one of the original Cinque Ports and home of Sandwich Secret Gardens.

THURSDAY Free day in Rochester and a chance for you to maybe visit the castle or discover the Dickens connections which includes Restoration House (Great Expectations) and Six Poor Travellers House immortalised in a Christmas short story. Alternatively the Guildhall Museum of local history is always worth a visit.

A busy fishing port, with a popular family beach, Looe has been a favourite holiday destination since Victorian times. Looe is situated on both sides of the River Looe. The two towns are joined together by a bridge across the river. It is worth visiting the harbour quay to watch the fishing boats coming in to unload their catches. The arrival of the small fishing fleet is a busy and colourful scene. Local fish can be found on the menus of many local restaurants.

THURSDAY A free day for you to explore and enjoy Newcastle. Just a short walk along the quayside from your hotel is the Millennium ‘Winking Eye’ bridge and Newcastle’s famous quayside. The 1930s restyled interior is famous for its Rex Whistler association and contains his exquisite romantic mural and the largest exhibition of his works. A military museum contains relics from the First Marquess of Anglesey’s tenure, who commanded the cavalry at the Battle of Waterloo. There are fine gardens and an Australasian arboretum, with an understorey of shrubs and wild flowers, an italianate-style summer terrace, and massed hydrangeas which give autumn colour. TUESDAY This morning we are bound for Aberfoyle and The Trossachs. Here we enjoy a sail on board Sir Walter Scott along beautiful Loch Katrine. Later we make our way via Lochearnhead to Killin for a break. We continue along Glen Dochart and make our way back to the hotel.

WEDNESDAY Our day begins with a ride east to Falkirk. Here we enjoy a ride on the restored Falkirk Wheel, used to transport canal barges from one level to another. This is a superb feat of engineering and a fascinating experience. From Falkirk we continue to the Firth of Forth and from under the famous railway bridge we take a ‘Maid of the Forth’ sail out past Inchcolm Island, with its Abbey and collection of wildlife.

THURSDAY Today we have a short walk from the hotel to the train station where we join the Scotrail train at Crianlarich for the ride to Oban. The line takes us through the Pass of Brander and alongside Loch Etive. In Oban we have time to explore the town, have a look at the harbour, enjoy lunch and relax. In the afternoon we take the train back to Crianlarich.

FRIDAY Leaving the hotel we make our way into southern Scotland and northwest England for our overnight.
