TUESDAY
Leaving the hotel we have an excursion to the Isle of Purbeck and Swanage, passing through Corfe Castle on the way. There is time to explore Swanage and maybe take a stroll along the seafront, and to obtain lunch before we make our way back to Bournemouth.

WEDNESDAY Today we have a day out beginning with a drive through the picturesque New Forest to delightful Salisbury with time to explore, obtain lunch and maybe visit the 13th century Cathedral with the tallest spire in England. In the afternoon we return to Bournemouth with chance for a stroll and a drink before dinner.

THURSDAY Today we have a ride out to Poole, with its magnificent harbour and Brownsea Island. We have time to explore harbourside, Poole Pottery, the nearby shopping streets, and to obtain lunch. Later we head off to Bournemouth.

FRIDAY After breakfast we leave and begin our journey home.

MONDAY This morning we travel west to the popular holiday resort of Tenby. With the old town walls, interesting little side streets and alleyways to explore and superb beaches. We have time for lunch in Tenby before we are on our way to Picton Castle and Woodland Garden. Regarded as Pembrokeshire’s finest stately home and gardens. There are 40 acres of some of the most beautiful gardens and grounds in West Wales.

TUESDAY Leaving the hotel we head south through Kidwelly and make our way to the picture postcard resort of Mumbles, delightfully located on Swansea Bay. We have time for a look round and to obtain lunch. This afternoon we have a short drive to the Gower Heritage Centre at Parkmill. Here we meet our guide for a tour taking us to the beautiful unspoilt scenery of the Gower Peninsula, designated an ‘Area of outstanding natural beauty’. After the tour we return to the Heritage Centre and enjoy a Gower Cream Tea.

WEDNESDAY Today our excursion takes us to St Bride’s Bay and Newgale Sands to the magical place of St. David’s, birthplace of the patron saint of Wales. St. David’s has a beautiful Cathedral, the smallest in Great Britain, well worth a visit. From St. David’s we head around the Preseli Mountains back to hotel.

THURSDAY After breakfast we leave and begin our homeward journey.

MONDAY After breakfast the morning is free for you to head out and explore Liverpool. If you are looking for retail therapy the excellent Liverpool One complex is the place to go. The city has some very interesting museums to visit and learn all about the past. We depart late afternoon for our return journey.

WEDNESDAY Our destination today is the former Kingdom of Fife. Heading inland via Cupar to the coast we enjoy a lovely coastal drive through the villages of Elie, Pittenweem and Crail on the way to St Andrews, world renowned home of golf. This is our lunch stop today and we have chance to explore before we head back across the River Tay to Dundee.

THURSDAY Today is free to explore in detail the city of Dundee. You could visit Discovery Point and board Captain Scott’s ship RRS Discovery where you will follow in the footsteps of him and his crew, see how they lived, what they ate, witness their hardships and triumphs on their heroic exploration of Antarctica, maybe visit the V & A Museum of Design, enjoy a spot of retail therapy or just sit and watch the world go by.

FRIDAY After breakfast we leave and head for home.

This morning we enjoy a driver to the historic town of Winchester. Here we can visit the cities cathedral and enjoy the remainder of the day in Winchester exploring its high street or perhaps the many museums in the town. Later, we visit the Bombay Sapphire Gin Distillery for their ‘Self Discovery Experience’. This includes a 15-minute guided tour throughout the Still House and complimentary drink in the Mill Bar. The Self-Discovery Experience showcases the very best of Bombay Sapphire gin and the beautiful, historic distillery.

The Bombay Sapphire Experience is in a working distillery, passengers must wear suitable footwear (e.g. No open-toe shoes or high heels).

TUESDAY This morning we head to the town of Lyndhurst, known as the capital of The New Forest since the times of William the Conqueror. Lyndhurst offers a wide range of shops, cosy tea rooms, old world pubs and cafes. In the afternoon, we continue through the stunning New Forest, arriving at Exbury Gardens, a spectacular 200-acre woodland garden famous for the Rothschild collection of rhododendrons, azaleas and camellias.

WEDNESDAY Our day begins with a ride through the South Downs, reaching the market-town of Petersfield where we can enjoy a stop in the heart of the National Park. The town has a variety of local shops, as well as a museum, Psychic Garden and art gallery. Today is also market day! Afterwards, we head to the coast where the rest of the day is yours in the Maritime City of Portsmouth, perhaps visit the Historic Dockyard, home of ‘Victory’ and ‘Mary Rose’, or visit the lovely Cathedral.

Jersey The Enchanted Isle by air from East Midlands or Humberside 8 Days 13 – 20 June 2020

National Trust Break inc Cherryburn, Seaton Delaval, Souter Lighthouse & Rievaulx Terrace 2 Days 21 – 22 June 2020

SUNDAY Depart Kettlewell’s yard early morning for our journey north and our first visit of the day Cherryburn this unassuming Northumbrian farmstead is the birthplace of famous artist and naturalist Thomas Bewick. Bewick is perhaps Northumberland’s greatest artist: a wood engraver and naturalist who revolutionised print art in Georgian England. Set in a tranquil garden with views across the Tyne Valley, Cherryburn is surrounded by the natural world that inspired his work. We depart here mid afternoon for Seaton Delaval which may have been one of the architect Sir John Vanbrugh’s smallest country houses; but it was home to the larger than life Delaval family. The house and surrounding landscape were in keeping with the style expected in Georgian society, yet behind the formality lies a story of theatrical mischief. Depart late afternoon for Newcastle and our hotel in time for dinner.

MONDAY Our first visit of the day is Souter Lighthouse and the Leas opened in 1871 Souter remains an iconic beacon. Hooped in red and white and standing proud on the coastline midway between the Tyne and the Wear. Souter is a special place all year round and was the first lighthouse in the world designed and built to be powered by electricity. To the north The Leas is a two and a half mile stretch of magnesian limestone cliffs, wave-cut foreshore and coastal grassland. The cliffs and rock stacks of Marsden Bay are home to nesting Kittiwakes, Fulmar, Cormorants, Shags and Guillemots. We depart for home mid afternoon calling at Rievaulx Terrace discover one of Ryedale’s true gems – the 18th-century landscape of Rievaulx Terrace. Stroll through woods, then out on to the terrace, with its stunning views down over the Cistercian ruin of Rievaulx Abbey.

TUESDAY A day at leisure in Llandudno, time for a deckchair on the promenade, visit the excellent shopping centre or go up the Great Orme.

WEDNESDAY A scenic drive via the Horseshoe Pass to Llangollen. After lunch we return via Betwys Coed where we shall make our second stop.

THURSDAY Today we have a lovely drive past Caernarfon then taking the coastal road towards Pwllheli then via Criccieth to Portmadog. Time here for lunch and shopping. Our return journey takes us past Betwys Coed and the Vale of Conway back to LLandudno.

FRIDAY After a leisurely breakfast we depart Llandudno mid morning, calling for lunch in Nantwich before continuing our scenic drive home.

Settle Carlisle Railway 2 Days 11 – 12 July 2020

The Settle-Carlisle railway line is one of the most famous in England. Half a million passengers ride on it every year, the majority of them for the sheer pleasure of journeying through some of the North’s most magnificent scenery from the comfort of the train. We also take in Skipton and more beautiful scenery through the Lake District.

YOUR HOTEL We stay at the Hallmark Hotel, situated in the centre of Carlisle next to the railway station. The striking Victorian building offers modern boutique interiors making it ideal for our stay. SATURDAY We travel to Yorkshire and the market town of Skipton, often called the gateway to the Dales with its many shops, cobbled streets and alleyways, plus one of the most complete and well preserved medieval castles in England. We then join our diesel train for our breath-taking journey on England’s most scenic railway line – the Settle to Carlisle, one of the last great railways to be built in the country and completed in 1876. Free time before dinner in the hotel.

SUNDAY Our return journey home this morning gets under way with more beautiful scenery as we travel to the wonderful Lake District. Travelling via Keswick and Grasmere to Bowness on Lake Windermere, where we have time to have lunch, perhaps take a boat trip or just enjoy your surroundings before continuing our journey home, arriving in the early evening.

Eastbourne 8 Days 18 – 25 July 2020

The elegance intended by the 7th Duke of Devonshire when he designed Eastbourne in 1834 still survives. Private houses, good hotels and banks of flowers are to be found along the three mile level Esplanade, while at its centre is the Wish Tower and several theatres. There is an excellent shopping centre. I always think Eastbourne is how holidays used to be! The warm welcome at the Haddon Hall Hotel and the beautiful Sussex countryside make Eastbourne the perfect venue for Kettlewell’s South coast holiday.

YOUR HOTEL The Haddon Hall Hotel is enviably situated at the seafront end of Devonshire Place, a broad lined tree avenue which links the main promenade with the town centre. The bandstand is located across the road from the hotel. All of the well furnished bedrooms have private facilities with colour TV and tea and coffee makers. There is a spacious lounge, ballroom, cocktail bar and some entertainment. There is a lift , although some rooms have a few steps to them.

SATURDAY We set off in the morning from Retford and local pick up points and head towards the south coast making a stop at lunchtime.

SUNDAY A day of leisure in Eastbourne. There is much to fill up the time – shopping, relaxing on the promenade, the Museums, the Pier, Redoubt fortress, sit in a deckchair and listen to the brass band on the promenade – to suggest but a few possibilities.

MONDAY A morning visit to Battle, a small historic town, with interesting shops and an Abbey which is open to the public. We shall then continue to Bexhill to round the day off.

TUESDAY Today we visit the lovely town of Royal Tunbridge Wells.

TUESDAY We begin with a drive through rural Norfolk countryside as we head north to the delightful town of Holt, an old fashioned Georgian town of impeccable colour-washed houses, antiques and picture galleries. We take a short break here for a coffee stop. Moving on, we reach the cost at Blakeney, famous for its seal colonies and here we join the boat at Morston Quay for a 1 hour trip to Blakeney Point and the seal colonies. Later we continue to Wells-next-the-Sea for our lunch break. This afternoon we call at Little Walsingham. Few villages in the country can compare with this gem set amidst parks and woodlands. The main High Street is an architectural treasure, completely medieval, with red brick and timber framed houses, whitewashed fronts and red pantiled roofs, as well as a number of quaint tea rooms.

WEDNESDAY
Today we take you into the City of Norwich for the morning to sightsee. The Cathedral in Norwich is well worth a visit, as is the cobbled Elm Hill district. This afternoon we have a drive to Horning where we join the Mississippi Paddle Steamer ‘Southern Comfort’ for a delightful sail around the Norfolk Broads.

THURSDAY Norfolk is our destination today as we head to Kings Lynn, a historic medieval port situated on the River Great Ouse for a coffee stop before continuing to visit Sandringham House and Grounds, the Norfolk retreat of Her Majesty the Queen, here we have free time to explore and obtain lunch.

SUNDAY Lying some 75 miles from the Seine estuary, Rouen is the historic capital of Normandy. Victor Hugo called Rouen ‘the city of a hundred spires’. Its Old Town is a delightful maze of narrow, cobblestone streets lined with fine half-timbered houses and wonderful gothic churches including the magnificent Cathedrale Notre Dame and the Eglise St. Maclou. Rouen’s Place du Vieux-Marche is famous as the site where Joan of arc was burned at the stake in 1431. MONDAY One of France’s main seaports, Le Havre sits on the English Channel at the mouth of the River Seine approximately 150 miles north west of Paris. Founded in the 1500’s Le Havre is one of France’s greenest cities and despite extensive damage during World War II, still retains a lot of its Gothic architecture with the city centre being designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005. With a number of impressive museums and galleries, Le Havre is an ideal city from which to explore the further reaches of Normandy, as well as being well placed to visit the nearby World War II Landing Beaches

The City is dominated by the magnificent Cathedral, now a World Heritage Site, and the city centre, being very compact, is best explored on foot or by horse drawn carriage. TUESDAY This morning we head for southern Kent and the land of mysterious marshes and smugglers. First we come to New Romney. A Cinque Port since 1155, the Great Storm of 1287 changed the course of the River Rother and made New Romney an inland town. Next we arrive at Lydd. As we head inland spot the tower of St Mildred’s Church at Tenterden. Horatio, Lord Nelson’s daughter by his mistress Emma Hamilton, was at one time the vicar’s wife. Known as the ‘Jewel in the Weald’ the town makes an ideal place to finish the day.

WEDNESDAY Today’s excursion takes us first to Chatham and the famous Historic Naval Dockyard. This vast maritime heritage site offers the visitor much to see, with an abundance of historic buildings dating from 1704, three warships, dry docks, Royal Dockyard Museum and much more. This afternoon we visit the City of Rochester with its magnificent Cathedral and historic castle. Take a stroll along High Street and explore the old town and cobbled streets.

There is an excellent shopping centre. I always think Eastbourne is how holidays used to be! The warm welcome at the Haddon Hall Hotel and the beautiful Sussex countryside make Eastbourne the perfect venue for Kettlewell’s South coast holiday.

YOUR HOTEL The Haddon Hall Hotel is enviably situated at the seafront end of Devonshire Place, a broad lined tree avenue which links the main promenade with the town centre. The bandstand is located across the road from the hotel. All of the well furnished bedrooms have private facilities with colour TV and tea and coffee makers. There is a spacious lounge, ballroom, cocktail bar and entertainment. There is a lift although some rooms have a few steps to them.

MONDAY We set off in the morning from Retford and local pick up points and head towards the south coast making a stop at lunchtime.

TUESDAY TO THURSDAY There will be free time, entertainment and excursions

FRIDAY All too soon we must leave Eastbourne after breakfast and head North. We shall make a lunch stop and reach Retford late afternoon.
