The elegance intended by the 7th Duke of Devonshire when he designed Eastbourne in 1834 still survives.  Private houses, good hotels and banks of flowers are to be found along the three mile level Promenade, while at its centre is the Wish Tower and several theatres close to the hotel.  There also is a very good shopping centre.  The warm welcome at the Mansion Lions Hotel and the beautiful Sussex countryside makes Eastbourne the perfect venue for Kettlewell’s South coast holiday.

YOUR HOTEL   The Mansion Lions Hotel stands just off the seafront between the Wish Tower and the bandstand.  The hotel has a lift to most bedrooms is licensed and provides some evening entertainment.  Bedrooms are en-suite and have television and tea making facilities.

SUNDAY  We set off in the morning from Retford and local pick up points and head towards the south coast making a stop at lunchtime.

MONDAY  A day of leisure in Eastbourne.  There is much to fill up the time – shopping, relaxing on the promenade, visiting the Butterfly centre, the Museums, the Pier, Redoubt fortress, sit in a deckchair and listen to the Brass band playing on the seafront to suggest but a few possibilities.

TUESDAY  We travel across the South Downs and visit historic Lewes and then onto Arundel, with a chance to look around the town or visit the castle (admission approximately £12) which is thoroughly recommended.

WEDNESDAY  Today a scenic drive to the Regency town of Brighton, calling for morning coffee at Newhaven.

THURSDAY  After breakfast we travel to Sheffield Park Gardens, which belongs to the National Trust, one hundred acres of landscaped gardens with five lakes on different levels laid out in the 18^th century (admission free for National Trust Members otherwise approximately £8).

FRIDAY  All too soon we must leave Eastbourne after breakfast and head North.  We shall make a lunch stop and reach Retford late afternoon.
