National Trust Break Bodnant Garden, Penrhyn Castle & Plas Newydd Country House 2 Days 2 – 3 September 2019

Croeso i Cymru…Welcome to Wales, a land of scenic beauty where the mountains of Snowdonia sweep down to stunning coastlines.

YOUR HOTEL Bulkeley Hotel is a Grade 1 listed building situated in the heart of Beaumaris, on the Isle of Angelsey just a short walk from the beach, with spectacular views of both the Menai Strait and the mountains. All bedrooms are en suite and have television & tea & coffee making facilities.

MONDAY Depart Kettlewell’s yard early morning for our journey west to Bodnant Garden. With intimate corners, sweeping lawns, grand terraces and verdant woodland, there are many gardens in one at Bodnant. Created over 150 years, with plants collected and brought to Britain from far afield, and the incredible vision of generations of the McLaren family and Puddle head gardeners, this haven of rarity and beauty with a stunning backdrop of the Carneddau mountains of Snowdonia is a delight for the senses. With year-round colour, the garden can be whatever you want it to be, whether that’s a hive of activity or a haven of tranquility and relaxation, this is truly a special place for all ages. Our second visit of the day will be to Penryn Castle 19th-century fantasy castle with spectacular surroundings. The dominating stone façade of Penrhyn Castle hides more than just its internal red-brick construction. The unique architecture, opulent interiors and fine art collection sit alongside a history of sugar and slate fortunes, of social unrest and the longest-running industrial dispute in British history. Discover Penrhyn’s history, its vast rooms, neo-Norman stairways and Victorian kitchens. The extensive grounds are perfect for exploring and enjoying spectacular views of Snowdonia and the North Wales coast. We depart late afternoon for our hotel time to relax before dinner.

TUESDAY Our first visit of the day is Plas Newydd House & Gardens an enchanting mansion and gardens, with spectacular views of Snowdonia. A whole day of things to see and do. Set on the shores of the Menai Strait amidst breathtakingly beautiful scenery, this elegant house was redesigned by James Wyatt in the 18th century. The 1930s restyled interior is famous for its Rex Whistler association and contains his exquisite romantic mural and the largest exhibition of his works. A military museum contains relics from the First Marquess of Anglesey’s tenure, who commanded the cavalry at the Battle of Waterloo. There are fine gardens and an Australasian arboretum, with an understorey of shrubs and wild flowers, an italianate-style summer terrace, and massed hydrangeas which give autumn colour. Depart late afternoon for our journey home.
