Scotland & the Borders 5 Days 3rd – 7th July 2012

At the southern gateway to Scotland, the borders region is a land of strong traditions and inspiring heritage sites.  Covering approximately eighteen hundred square miles the Scottish Borders stretch from the rolling hills and moorland in the west, through gentler valleys to the high agricultural plains of the east.  Our base is in Gretna Green, an ideal location to discover this lovely area.

YOUR HOTEL  The Gretna Hall Hotel a recently refurbished and A lovely hotel on the site of the original Blacksmiths Shop where the very early marriages took place and still do to this day.

TUESDAY  Depart local pick up points and travel north and making a stop at Kendall in the Lake District before continuing to our hotel at Gretna Green for our stay of four nights, arriving in good time to settle in before dinner.

WEDNESDAY  This morning we depart after breakfast and head into the undiscovered Southwest – Dumfries and Galloway.  We take the Solway Heritage Route to Dumfries where Scotland’s national poet spent the last years of his life.  There will be opportunity to visit Robert Burns House and the Burns Mausoleum as well as time for lunch and shopping.  We continue along the coastal smugglers route well known to Burns in his capacity as an exciseman, to New Abbey and a visit to Sweetheart Abbey for an afternoon tea stop

THURSDAY  A leisurely day today we have a half day in Carlisle, time to shop, visit the Tullie Museum or the Castle before returning to Gretna Green where you can have free time to visit the Blacksmiths Shop where you can take a very interesting tour (admission extra) or just wander into the shopping area where there are bargains to be had.

FRIDAY  Today we have another lovely scenic tour this time further north via Liddersdale water and up to Hawick, a town which is a frequent winner of floral awards and internationally famous for its fine knitwear here we shall make a coffee stop.  We continue our tour to Selkirk a town standing high above the Ettrick and Yarrow Valley, we shall make a break here for lunch where you could visit Sir Walter Scott’s museum if you wish.

SATURDAY  After a lovely holiday we must leave Scotland with a drive by Hadrian’s Wall and home making a stop for lunch along the way.
